“The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry” Robert Burns
Robert Burns coined the term, and how true this is.

When Dakota was in her teens, she broke her arm during gymnastics, a moment that unexpectedly changed the course of her life. What followed was a difficult journey that began with a prescription for OxyContin and spiraled into a struggle with addiction. She found herself in a crowd that led her further down a dangerous path. One of the mothers was even supplying pot to her daughter and friends, which only fueled Dakota's downward spiral.
In an attempt to save her from the negative influences surrounding her, we made a bold decision. We sent her to Botswana, to my sister, where she would work at a safari camp. The hope was that being far from the environment that was dragging her down would help her reset and come back with a fresh outlook on life. For a while, it seemed to work. Dakota returned to school and tried to stay on track, but the pull of her old crowd was strong, and eventually, she found herself back in the same troubling situation.
After school, Dakota moved to Vancouver for a time, and later back to the Island. In the later years, we started to rebuild our relationship. We began Yoga Teacher Training together and had plans for a future filled with purpose and healing. But life, as we all know, doesn’t always follow the plans we so carefully lay out. Sometimes, despite our best efforts, things take a different course.
Just two days ago, I was overjoyed that my upcoming retreat was fully booked. But life, ever the unpredictable teacher, threw in a curveball—a cancellation. Now, I find myself with one room left, a reminder that even the best-laid plans can change in an instant.
🌹 Life has taught me to have plans A, B, and sometimes all the way to Z.
